How a commission works
1. The idea
Share the place, photographs or painting that has inspired the commission, along with any thoughts on size, format or atmosphere.
2. Developing the painting
I’ll work from the references and discuss the composition with you. Where relevant, I may also make studies from the landscape itself.
3. The finished painting and delivery
The final oil painting is completed, framed and prepared for delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
A few common questions about commissioning a painting.
Can you create a landscape painting from photographs?
Yes. Reference photographs are often the starting point for a commission, and I can work from several images alongside my own research where relevant.
How long does a commission take?
Generally 4 to 6 weeks, however this can vary a little due to size, drying time and framing. I will always give a more accurate timescale at the time of initial talks. If there is a pressing deadline just let me know and I will do my best to make it work.
What size do you work to for commissions?
The size is dependent on your own preferences and budget. I will often guide on the best proportions for a particular scene so that, compositionally it works well. I paint commissions as mini pieces from 6-inch miniatures through to larger works of 48 inches / 120cm and beyond.
How much does a commission cost?
Pricing is based mainly on the size of the artwork and framing choice. As a guide, commissions range from £250 for a 6" x 6" mini painting up to around £1,900 for a 36" x 28" painting. I am always happy to suggest sizes to suit a particular wall or budget.
Is framing and delivery included?
Yes. Framing is discussed as part of the commission and is included in the quoted price. The frame can affect the overall finished size on the wall, so I’ll guide you through the options before starting. A range of standard and more bespoke framing options are available. Delivery is included to UK mainland, while international shipping can easily be quoted and arranged.
I like a painting that has sold. Can I commission something similar?
Yes. Many commissions begin with a painting that has already sold, or one a client would like in a different size or format. I can use an existing work as a starting point and create a new painting with a similar feel, tailored to your space and preferences.
