About Matthew Cordwell
Matthew Cordwell is a contemporary British landscape artist inspired by the natural world and the shifting nature of light. Painting en plein air in oil, he seeks to capture the essence of a place in time through expressive and intuitive marks.

Working outside in all conditions, each painting is shaped by the emotional qualities of the scene before him. “Every sense is alert and gathering information whilst painting on site. Sensory inputs cannot be separated from the scene before me and form an indispensable quality in the painting itself.” This lived experience of landscape and elements gives the work its distinctive painterly character, appreciated by collectors drawn to atmosphere and light. It also informs his studio practice, where scenes are refined and scaled while retaining their immediacy. His work has been exhibited at art fairs and collected by private buyers across the UK.

Alongside working directly from life, Matthew also undertakes landscape and seascape painting commissions. Using photographs, memories or meaningful locations as a starting point, he creates original paintings that remain rooted in observation and a strong sense of place.
